Why This Question Matters
When you begin researching
home energy upgrades, it can quickly become confusing. Some grants mention assessments. Others do not. Some require a full home plan. Others appear to be straightforward applications.
The difference comes down to how you plan to upgrade your home.
Are you improving one area only?
Or are you aiming to significantly improve your overall energy rating?
The answer determines whether a
Home Energy Assessment is required.
If you are upgrading your home through the
One Stop Shop model, a
Home Energy Assessment is mandatory.
Under the framework set by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, a
One Stop Shop upgrade must begin with a detailed assessment of your home. This ensures the work carried out is technically suitable and designed to improve your
BER rating in line with grant requirements.
This pathway is typically used when combining measures such as insulation, heating system upgrades, ventilation and windows as part of a coordinated project. Because the goal is to improve the overall performance of your home, the assessment creates the roadmap. It identifies where heat is being lost, what upgrades are appropriate and how they should be sequenced.
Without that assessment, the
One Stop Shop grants cannot proceed.
Grants That Do Not Require a Full Assessment
Some individual grants can be applied for without entering the
One Stop Shop route.
For example, if you are installing
Solar PV or applying for certain single insulation measures independently, you may not need a full
Home Energy Assessment. In these cases, the grant application is made on a single-measure basis.
However, this route focuses only on that one upgrade. It does not provide a whole-home plan or a coordinated upgrade strategy.
For some homeowners, that is perfectly suitable. For others, especially those planning multiple improvements, it can lead to missed opportunities or out-of-sequence upgrades.
The Difference Between the Two Routes
The key distinction is structure.
The individual grant route supports a single improvement.
The
One Stop Shop route supports a planned, whole-home upgrade.
A
Home Energy Assessment sits at the centre of that structured approach. It removes uncertainty and replaces it with a tailored plan specific to your home.
Across Dublin, Mayo and our wider service areas, many homeowners begin with questions about cost or grants. In reality, the most important first step is clarity. Once you understand how your home is performing, the grant pathway becomes much easier to navigate.
What Happens Next?
If you are unsure which grant route applies to you, the safest starting point is a
Home Energy Assessment.
You receive a detailed breakdown of your home’s current performance, a clear upgrade roadmap and guidance on which grants apply to your situation. From there, you can decide whether to proceed with a full
One Stop Shop upgrade or move forward with an individual measure.
As a Registered SEAI
One Stop Shop, Churchfield Home Services manages the assessment, grant process and installation journey from start to finish. Grants are deducted at source, so you pay the net cost only.
The right grant pathway begins with understanding your home properly.
