Do I need Planning Permission for Solar PV or Thermal?
Irish planning rules state that for more than 12m² of ‘Solar Panels’ you need Planning Permission. We have had no refusals to date and can help you or your architect with sketches and scale drawings if needed.
How long will the installation take and is it disruptive?
Normally we will complete domestic premises in one day. Most work is compelted outside the hoome. With some work required inside the home as we must connect into the fuse board. As a whole, the installation process is not very disruptive.
I’m interested in getting Solar PV or Thermal installed. What happens next?
Provide us with your Eircode or GPS co-ordinates. From that, we can normally see the space available for modules and confirm the price. Before installation, we will schedule and complete a technical survey of your home to plan the most efficient installation of your Solar system.
Do I get paid for surplus electricity that I send to the grid?
Not at the moment. But it’s likely in the future that this option will become available.
Does Solar PV & Thermal work in Ireland?
Yes. We have a lot of cloudy days in Ireland. A lot of cloudy, rainy, windy days. Especially if you live on the west coast!
Fortunately, Solar PV and Thermal systems work off diffused light. We get around 60% of our energy from indirect sunlight and the remaining 40% comes from the sun’s direct rays.
So, despite the cloudy days, there is still enough sunlight to produce hot water and electricity for your home.
All of our gas boiler installers are RGI accredited and carry RGII ID cards.
What boiler model do you recommend?
A good one!
The most popular boiler we sell is the Ideal Logic. It’s the best value ‘A’ rated boiler we offer. The best boiler we sell, in our opinion, is the Viessmann – a multi-award winning work of German precision, engineering and craftsmanship. It’s more expensive. But it’s worth it.
When you’re completing a Gas Boiler home assessment, what kind of questions do you ask?
Size of house and number of radiators existing. The location of the boiler, and type of flue existing. Is the flue horizontal or vertical? The majority of the time it’s a horizontal flue. All the prices on the website include for a replacement horizontal flue. If it turns out to be vertical it is more expensive.
How do I pay for works done?
On-time hopefully 🙂
We accept payments via debit and credit cards, Electronic Funds transfer (EFP ) and cash lodgements.
For more detail on our payments and refunds policy visit our Payment Policy page
When is the Gas Boiler ‘grant’ paid?
The short answer.
Once you’ve been approved for the grant – immediately.
The longer answer.
Churchfield Home Services is one of the few contractors in Ireland that can act as a counterparty for Electric Ireland. In plain English, this means we can process the grant payment. Rather than them issuing you with the grant, which you would then have to pay to us, the grant is instead issued to us. Which we deduct from your invoice.
Saving you time and hassle of having to communicate with us about the grant. And then lodging it into our accounts.
It also saves you money
The reason is this. If you use a payment plan (like Flexi-Fi), you’ll need to apply for the full about of the cost of the Gas Boiler. For simplicity, let’s say the cost of the boiler is €1,000 and you borrow €1,000. Your repayments would be €1,000 plus the loan interest.
However, if you use an approved Electric Ireland counterparty (like us), we automatically deduct the grant amount from the total cost of the boiler.
The grant amount is €700. The cost of the boiler replacement is €1,000. That means we charge you €300 (€1,000 – €700 = €300).
If you are using a loan to pay for the new gas boiler, you only need to apply for a €300 loan. This means you’ll also pay less in interest (as it’s a smaller amount of money for the lender to claim interest on).
Using an Electric Ireland counterparty (like us) saves you time, hassle – and importantly, money.
If you use a contractor without a counterparty agreement, the grant is paid to you. Which you then pay to the contractor.
Is there a grant available for External Wall Insulation?
Yes. Yes, there is.
There are two grants. The SEAI grant. And the Electric Ireland grant. The SEAI grant ranges from €2,750 to €6,000 depending on the type of house you live in.
The Electric Ireland grants is a flat €472 for all properties. It ’s more of a phased incentive than a grant. It is different from the SEAI grant in that credits are added to the homeowners Electric Ireland account. Unlike the SEAI grant, which can be applied directly against the External Wall Insulation cost.
Are the grant means tested?
Happily, no they’re not.
How much does it cost to externally insulate your home?
The cost of externally insulating your house will depend on the type of house you live in (is it detached, semi-detached, mid-terraced), it’s size, depth of insulation, the type of finish you’d prefer and your colour choice.
A mid-terraced house would cost roughly €10,000 – €11,000 to externally insulate without the SEAI or Electric Ireland grants. With the combined grants of SEAI and Electric Ireland of €3,222, the cost to the owner is between €6,778 and €7,778.
As a guideline, externally insulating your home could cost between €6,000 – €12,000 with grants. We can give exact amounts once we get talking to you.
Do you provide finance?
We do. Through our finance partners Flexi-Fi.
Flexi-Fi is a retail instalment payment plan facility, an easy alternative to paying with cash or credit card for your energy efficiency upgrades. Customers complete a simple, quick, online application form on any device and receive a credit decision in minutes.
How long does it take to complete an External Wall Insulation project?
An External Wall Insulation project takes approximately two weeks to complete. From start to finish. This being Ireland, it’ll come as no surprise that this timeframe is weather dependent. Completion times can also vary depending on the size of your property.
Happily, it is a non-intrusive installation. Which means that you can continue living in your home while work is being carried out.
Is Planning Permission required?
As a general rule, no. Unless your building is a listed structure. External Wall Insulation is exempt from planning permission
In legalese, this is what Section 4(1) (h) of the Planning and Development Act 2000 has to say about it. You’re exempt from planning permission for External Wall Insulation so long as the works;
“ …do not materially affect the external appearance of the structure so as to render the appearance inconsistent with the character of the structure or of neighbouring structures”.
What is the best material for External Wall Insulation?
There are a number of insulation materials available when it comes to choosing what is to be used in external wall insulation systems. It is vital when choosing the insulation material to go on the walls of your home that you choose a material with an Irish Agrément Board Certificate. This certificate includes all the information about specifications, design data and installation recommendations. It will also give you the u-value of the thickness of the material.
White EPS Insulation
EPS is the most commonly used material in external insulation in Ireland. The
beads are fused together in a number of processes including steam injection.
Platinum EPS Insulation
EPS is the most commonly used material in external insulation in Ireland. The beads are fused together in a number of processes including steam injection.
Mineral Wool Sheet
Mineral wool is made by spinning molten slag into long fibres, a similar process to that of making fibreglass.
Polyisocyanurate, PIR, is essentially an improvement on polyurethane.
Is there a grant available for updating my Gas Boiler?
There is. Two.
€750 from SEAI.
And about €459* in the form of an energy credits discount (*this varies depending on boiler type).
The boiler grant is available if you upgrade your heating controls. Heating controls allow you to decide which rooms (or zones) in your house receive heating.
There is no grant available for a straight boiler swap (despite what other website’s claim).
When you purchase a new boiler you have the option to avail of a €750 SEAI grant as well as energy credits for upgrading your heating controls.
For example, where you to buy our Ideal Logic gas boiler, it would cost you €2.090. There is no grant available for a gas boiler on its own.
In contrast, if you purchase the same gas boiler and opt for zoned heating controls, you are able to avail of the SEAI grant of €750 and energy credits worth €459.
What should cost €3,159 (gas boiler + heating controls) instead costs €1,950. You save a whopping €1,209!
You’re getting a much more efficient system, it costs you less than getting a boiler on its own and you’ll save about 20% on your heating bill annually.
Getting the heating controls to upgrade is a total no brainer.
After filling out the online form. you’ll receive a call from one of our customer care experts seeking to understand how we can help you make best insulation choice for your home.
Churchfield offers a truly expert service and have the necessary trained and certified staff that several other competing businesses obviously lacked.
They installed a new Gas Boiler, Solar Panel and three circuit central heating system for us, cleanly and efficiently installed, impressing ourselves, but more importantly impressing the SEAI Inspector too!
We since had two minor glitches caused by supplier manufacturers rather than the Churchfield installation.
These minor faults were immediately and courteously corrected by Churchfield at no additional cost, that process personally overseen to a successful conclusion by Caroline of Churchfield.
Accordingly we can unequivocally recommend their highly professional service, especially as it was also highly competitively priced.read more
they advertise a lot of services on their website that they don't provide. Like internal wall or cavity insulation for example. Should update the website to reflect the actual services they provide. Felt little uninterested in more complicated case as well like if they cant do all walls they just rejected as unsuitable for them. I called twice today and twice they said they don't do internal insulation and it is advertised on the website.read more
They installed (among other things) a new boiler 2 years ago. When my rads weren't working last Nov, I got a plumber out who was disgusted (his words) by how the system was installed. He said 'whoever did this should be shot'. Well, as Churchfield guarantee their work (at least that's what it says on a bit of paper) I got in touch. That was November. It is now well into January and.... I've been left waiting 3 times, (having taken time off work each time). They are uncommunicative and unreliable and the level of customer care is appalling. They have now fobbed me off altogether on another company without any notice, no one even bothered to let me know they had cancelled this appointment after I made it a month ago and again took time off. Avoid this company, go with someone who will look after their customers. My system is still leaking nearly 2 months later.read more
A first visit. Tremendous work on restoring & preserving this iconic building. Enthralled by the exhibition spaces, imaginatively set out, throughout the different floors. A top quality museum and more. We also thoroughly enjoyed lunch at The Commons. One to visit again. And, there is a lovely garden and outdoor space.read more
Booked a new boiler and on the day they were due to install they rang to tell me the booking date was now another month. I was told I would get a call back last week for clarification but still waiting and I was told that I would get a call from the first service agent 2 days ago when he was back in the office but still no contact. No compensation offered and no heat in the last month and now not for another month. Was told I could get a refund of deposit but that would mean I would be waiting longer to get a new boiler.
Edit: I would like to add, as the respondent has not looked into my complaint before addressing my review, that I was not told, as stated, that the date would not be held, nor was it on the documents I received. It was also not stated when I requested if any additional information was needed, due to my emails not being responded to. I was not stated either when I rang and paid the deposit that the date would be changed and I have still had no contact regarding it. I have however received an email looked for the grant offer from SEAI. Priorities seem to be more about getting the money rather than solving the issue.
Further to this I logged a complaint on the 24th of October and was told I would be contacted within 48 hours. Still to receive any contact on the 6th of November. The heating was due to be replaced 2 weeks ago, after waiting a month without heat. Now won't be done for another 2 weeks. So 2 months without heating.
You'll forgive me if I don't believe that everything possible is being done to rectify this.read more
Wouldn’t recommend. The workmanship itself is relatively fine but Churchfield’s project managers and staff have woeful communication and little follow up on issues. Their invoicing conditions mean you pay for all the work before it’s completed too, so I’ve just been left with holes in my wall, cracked window frames etc and no communication as to when it’s going to be fixed.read more
Broke promise of installation date. It's a pity they don't follow their own websight pledge relating to picking a time to suit the customer. They talk a load of nonsensical technical garbage impressing nobody only themselves. They couldn't even get an installation date right. What does that tell you???read more

We have had Churchfield heating & insulation at our house.
Unfortunately the boiler they suggested-Viessmann to replace our beast of 22 yrs isn’t compatible to a copper coil tank-Hence our hot water won’t heat up.
Externally our doorbell, security light & outside plugs still don’t work, nearly a month on,but more upsetting is that the bottom elevation of front is beyond crooked. It’s been snagged since the work completed & still neighbours pointing it out to us.
Churchfield always prompt to execute payment by us,which we did,but realistically isn’t this why the time lapses so quickly. All paid, yet job unfinished.
Our initial points of contact were so lovely,we had a rec for this company from our neighbours the Wade’s
So frustrating now-
Lots of deliveries missed-no doorbell
Scary scary at night-no security light.
Bottom 4” of rear plinth bare
Deck cut up around these areas by CF & the insulation not down to the ground level as it is at front & side.
Ranting now & that’s not what I wanted.
I just want my house done properly.
I want to be able to recommend CF
But now,as things stand-I am really frustrated.read more

We couldn’t fault the work we have had done by Churchfield. Everything from start to finish was fast, efficient and expertly done. Our site manager David Gallagher was a pleasure to deal with, even when we had the smallest query. John Comerford, the foreman and his team (Paddy, Martin & Co) could not have been anymore professional than they were. We were very comfortable letting them come & go throughout the house and we enjoyed chatting with them on site. We would highly recommend Churchfield to anyone looking for external/internal insulation.read more

Introduced to Churchfield through the SEAI government scheme. They immediately assigned 4 surveyors for all the different jobs. Took a while to start but then it was like a whirlwind through my house. It was like 60 minute makeover multiplied by 100. The amount of work those guys got through was totally stunning. Each team was checked at every step. So much work. I was amazed. A complete wonder. I had the Romanians outside insulation guys that work from 7.30 till it gets dark. Sat Sunday & even St Patrick’s day. 15 minutes lunch break that they had outside. Miracle workers. Claudio rules. Lithuanians in the attic. They do 3 houses a day. Irish guys put in the central heating. OMG. All floor boards & 40 year old carpet up.. worked quickly & Project co-ordinator in the middle of it. Then the electrician..all go. Lastly outside doors & a bit of a hitch. Back door wouldn’t fit because all the walls finished. Then the locks won’t work. Extremely heavy doors. Front ones fit well but a bit of finishing off to do. I was up till midnight trying yet again to dust & Hoover but after all the work I’m not surprised.
All in all Churchfield really are a superior company. Incredibly organised & fabulous workers.read more

Churchfield Home Services did a major upgrade on our home heating system in Dublin recently. They installed a new high-efficiency gas boiler, 3-zone heating controls, a new hot water cylinder (with a filter) and replaced most of the radiators as well as installing a totally new one in the en-suite. They did a superb job and also facilitated the completion of documentation to secure the SEAI grant of €750. I would recommend them highly.read more

We got a new heating system installed by churchfield and attic insulation . We were happy with the work done for the insulation part but extremely disappointed with the plumbing work . Very poor finish and rough work . In the living room the pipes were angled to facilitate the work but it looks really bad ! In the bathroom the towel rads were first seated on the floor . We asked to get them installed higher on the wall , the pipes are still visible from the floor along the wall , it gives a really poor finish!
The walls were all left opened and extremely damaged where pipes were installed .
We found the office person we had to deal with very unpleasant on the phone .
We would not use churchfield in the future .read more

Based on my experience so far , Churchfield has been extremely helpful, very knowledgeable in the areas I inquired about. We couldn't go with Churchfield for the boiler as the builder wanted to use his own plumber and are waiting for planning permission before we can confirm if we will be doing the external insulation which is why it's so impressive that knowing this , that Churchfield's Cathal was so generous with his time and expert guidance on the proper installation of Viessmann boilers and flues. How would I know if it was expert ? Well when challenged by the builders plumber I rang Viessman directly while the plumber was there and they backed up Churchfield 100%.
